The health of today’s children is being challenged by an increase in eating fast food, watching TV and playing video games whilst there has been a decrease in a nutritious diet and physical activity. Parents are now looking at exercise programs for their children in an effort to keep them fit and set them up for a lifetime of good health.

CHILDREN

It has been proven that Pilates offers a huge range of benefits for children. As children they will formulate the physical attributes that they will take with them through life. These include:

- Body awareness

- Mental concentration

- Injury prevention

- Strength and flexibility of the abdominal and inner muscles of the body (the core or trunk)

- Self esteem and confidence

- Improved posture and spinal alignment

- Co-ordination and balance

- Improved athletic performance

Beyond physical fitness, having a strong core and good posture can open other benefits for children e.g. improved concentration. If children are expanding their energy throughout the day just to maintain stability, their stamina for homework and other after school activities may be depleted. A strong core conserves their energy and allows them to be more attentive to schoolwork.

Pilates is a mind and body discipline which guides children to have a relaxed state of mind. Working to strengthen their bodies can increase children’s self esteem, stamina, abdominal strength and sleep. That combined with the focused breathing techniques can help children attain a much more serene and less stressful outlook.
